The Beet Bloody Mary at Penrose
The Penrose, located in the Upper East Side, is a brunch place staple in the area. The cocktails at the Penrose are top notch and the French toast sticks are a must if you’re swinging by for brunch. But most importantly, they have two Bloody Marys on their menu. The first is a classic bloody with a slight twist and the other is the Beet Bloody Mary. For this review, I’ll be rating the Beet Bloody Mary.
Key Takeways
The Beet Bloody Mary is served in a standard drinking glass and has a piece of candied ginger as the garnish. This Bloody feels more like a morning juice than the beloved brunch cocktail, but it is a good drink overall. I’m not entirely sure if this contains tomato, which I feel is essential for a Bloody Mary to be considered a Bloody Mary. For the sake of this review, I’m going to consider it a Bloody Mary.
There is a strong beet and ginger taste and it’s pretty smooth. The ginger packs a nice punch but it doesn’t feel overwhelming. The candied ginger tastes great if you drop it in the drink right away and enjoy it when you’re done as a nice treat. This drink costs $15.

If you’re a fan of beets and want a nice cocktail, I recommend giving this one a try. If you’re looking for an actual Bloody Mary, I’d say skip this one.
